UK announces its Post-BREXIT tariff regime

The United Kingdom’s government has released its post-Brexit non-preferential tariff schedule (UK Global Tariff - UKGT) on 19 May 2020, which is set to replace the EU's Common External Tariff from 1 January 2021.

The following are the main proposed changes impacting exporters from outside the EU:

  • elimination of “nuisance tariffs” (those below 2%);
  • elimination of tariffs on products used in UK production, such as copper alloy tubes,
  • screws and bolts;
  • elimination of the EU’s (complex) “Meursing Table”;
  • removal of tariff variations;
  • rounding off of tariffs down to standardized percentages.

Any Free Trade Agreement (FTA) benefits that qualifying products to the EU enjoy at the moment would disappear and be subject to new FTAs that the UK needs to negotiate.
